I flew Jestar from Narita airport Tokyo to Cairns Australia in late January 2011. I was travelling with a sick child so we arrived early at the airport at the airport to check-in, after a 7 and a half hour bus ride to get there. Nevertheless, we then had to stand for almost 2 and a half hours just to check in because Jetstar had only 2 check-in desks for economy passengers for 3 flights (not sure if some of them were code share). I can't imagine how long the many people behind us in the queue had to wait ! They also had a Star class check in desk for the richies, but the clerk stood by idle most of the time and it was not used to relieve any of the stress of the standing check-in passengers. When Jetstar say come early, they really mean it - because a very sizeably portion of your trip requires standing for hours on end just to get on the plane! My child was ill and distressed and I found that part of the service utterly disgusting.

Check in staff at overseas ports such as Tokyo are outsourced to third party service providers. Instead of writing here, you should go through the proper channels by writing to Jetstar Customer Relations department (details on their website under contact us) and tell of your experience. I'm an ex employee and if what you say is true, I agree it's certainly not good enough.
Believe it or not they actually do take it seriously when they hear about service failures across various departments, and from experience if enough complaints are made about a particular issue, it can make a difference in making improvements/changes.
It is the complaints resulting from idiots not reading their fare rules and pinning their mistakes on the airline that they don't care about.

Why would you travel with a sick child?? not doing them any favours by doing so & i doubt very much you would have waited that long...Its just not possible especially in cairns.
