Jetstar couldn't get bags off plane

Flew to Queenstown from Auckland. Chose Jetstar because they were the first carrier into Queenstown in the morning ( 9am ) and we were on limited time. When we arrived at the Queenstown air terminal we were late getting to the baggage carousel. To our surprise we found most of the passengers at the carousel waiting. A Jetstar representative approached us and asked if we were on the Auckland flight that just arrived. We said yes and she said unfortunately Jetstar couldn't get the bags out of the aircraft due to not having the right equipment.
She gave us the option of waiting at the terminal until 11.30am ( two hours ) when another Jetstar flight would arrive with the right equipment on it. Or, we could have our bags couriered to our hotel at around 1pm. We chose the latter and gave our hotel name and mobile number.
By 3pm we had heard nothing and started getting a little worried. One because all our winter clothes were in our bags and we were freezing when going outside, and two I had my wife's birthday present in my bag to give to her the following day.
By 4pm I decided to head to Queenstown airport to try and get our bags. We had rang and rang the Jetstar 0800 line but no answer. On arrival at the terminal there was one Jetstar lady. She was being asked in a heated discussion with 6 Asian tourists about where their bags were. To my shock I realised they were on our flight. The lady said she didn't know where our bags were except they weren't in Queenstown. The equipment hadn't arrived to get our bags off and our aircraft had departed with our baggage still on board.
I didn't know what to do so went onto the Jetstar Facebook page asking the age old question ' where are our bags?'. The web page administrator got back to me and said she had made enquiries and our bags were in Dunedin! They were busing them up and should be at Queenstown that night. Still no phone calls from Jetstar, so we went back to Queenstown airport. It was now around 7pm. No sign of any Jetstar staff, in fact the airport was closed other than one German cleaner. So we spent the first night in the clothes we were in, which were becoming uncomfortable and as it was beginning to snow, a little inpractical.
We heard the 9am Jetstar flight fly overhead the next morning so I got in my rental and drove quickly back to Queenstown airport. There were 3 Jetstar employees. As I approached there were two guys looking as tired and disheveled as me. They said it had been a nightmare with having two families, but the good news was the bus with our bags had arrived. They told me that some passengers were going to a wedding in wanaka and all their formal clothing had been on the aircraft.
So at 9.30am the next day on our 3 day holiday in Queenstown we were reunited with our bags. No apology no phone calls.
Never ever ever again

I would look up on the travel

I would look up on the travel expense part of their complaint website and see if there is anything you could claim.

I successfully got money for a shuttle after a flight was delayed overnight.
