I was up at the Whitsundays with my partner last March when Cyclone Ului hit Airlie Beach/Proserpine area. Our flight was due to leave about 12 hours after the cyclone hit and we wanted to get in touch with Jetstar to find out if our flight was cancelled and change our flights to the next day, but there was no power for over 24 hours, no land line and the Optus network was down after the cyclone. Can't change flights or call a taxi to get to the airport with no phone service.
When I got in contact with Jetstar they would not give me a refund or even put us on the next flight for a discount. Then proceeded to want to charge some insane amount for a flight from Proserpine to Brisbane. She told me they had sent me a text letting me know the flight was not cancelled. A text that I still had not even received because Optus was still down.
I ended up booking our flights with Virgin blue who were very compassionate about our situation and gave us great fairs for a last minute booking.
