Jetstar Monopoly

Breif histoy: Qantas used to do both the Darwin-Bali run and the Brisbane-Bali run, but after the Bali Bombings, and thing got a bit quiet, they dumped both legs. Fortunatly for Darwinians Garuda stuck with us and continued to provide a service, as did our local airline Air North. When things began to pick-up again in Bali, as did the need for flights, there were a lot of Brisbane travelers who were flying to Darwin, then on to Bali with Garuda, it did not take long for Qantas/Jetstar to cotten on to this. Jetstar moved in and immediatly muscled out Air North and then began it's price war on Garuda, Guruda stuck with us for as long as it could but eventualy pulled out, and as quickly as it's last plane rose into the sky, so did Jetstars prices. Held to ransom by a sole carrier we paid through the nose, Jetstar continued to push the Brisbane-Darwin-Bali leg, untill.......
AirAsia took up the route, and supplied a good cheap service, but once again Jetstar lined them up in their sights and the price war began. AirAsia, like it's predecessor Garuda, eventualy buckled under the pressure and they to cancelled the run. Prices immediatly began to soar with Jetstar, the $139-$199 tickets dissappeared, quickly being replaced by $550-$700 ones from Darwin, whilst still advertising $199 from Brisbane.
I fly this leg 20-25 times a year, I have been stranded, cancelled, late, overcharged by Jetstar so many times I have lost count. AirAsia was a great budget airline and i miss them, but I heard the comment a lot that they were a dodgy Asian airline and Jetstar was Ozzie, well people, Airasia has a lot of International Awards on it's mantle peice, Jetstar has a big fat 0 and there is a good reason for that, poor service.

Jetstar have always been

Jetstar have always been pretty transparent about the fact that their fare prices fluctuate with demand; I guess while they probably still won't be as cheap as they used to be given they're currently the only low-fares airline that fly that route, you could probably try booking your flights as far ahead as you possibly can and they'll at least be cheapER.

Or if that doesn't work you could try to contact the other airlines who pulled out from the routes and let them know there's some serious competition to be had. (Though let's be honest, contacting any company never means the specifics of your complaint will be elevated through to the upper echelons of management.)
