Outbound flight Melbourne/KL/Bangkok with Air Asia X was reasonably pleasant, cabin staff made an effort to welcome us and were delightful in playing with our 1- and 2-year old children and chatting with us about this and that. Return journey Bangkok/Melbourne with Jetstar not so pleasant, the cabin staff were quite cold to us and did not make us feel welcomed at all. Unfortunately my kids were sick and the 1-year old vomited in the bassinet and a bit on the seats/floor, I had to clean it all up myself and return to the crew area several times to ask for wet towels, plastic bags etc... the young Thai male crewmember attending our section was quite helpful but the Australian and Japanese crewmembers did not want a bar of us... I handed a bag of dirty towels to an Aussie crewmember to be thrown away and she made a great production of washing her hands etc after handling the bag... which was clearly intended to say how put-out she was... there was no graciousness at all, considering I was quite embarrassed about my kids being sick, this made me feel even worse... then later on, half an hour before landing I changed a nappy which wasn't in any way messy, and grabbed a handful of rubbish from around the seat just trying to clean up, went to the crew area to get rid of it, I clearly displayed what it was, but the Japanese lady crewmember must not have been looking, because when realized what I had handed her, she jumped back about a metre, throwing everything up in the air which then landed all over the place, another crewmember then informed me that I could dispose of things myself in the rear of the plane... which was a total lie, all there is is a tiny receptacle that is intended to take paper cups... there was a long queue for the toilets and I had crying babies to deal with, so that wasn't an option either... I found it extremely humiliating having to grovel around on my hands and knees in front of the crew picking up all the rubbish they had dropped, I couldn't meet their eye as I went down the back of the plane with my tail between my legs to force the items into the paper cup receptacle... I fully appreciate they probably have regulations about handling nappies and so on... but what I cannot understand is why they couldn't just hold out a plastic bag for me to drop the items into... on Air Asia they would probably just do it themselves and then quietly wash their hands after I had left... hence I wasn't aware there was any issue... I am now. Basically the crewmembers (with one exception, the lovely Thai man who is probably being paid half what his colleagues get), made no effort to put me at ease, the attitude was basically that they were doing me a favour by allowing me to fly with them... I will never do it again. Thumbs up to Air Asia, Malaysian business class and Singapore airlines, all of which I have flown with many times as a business traveller, thumbs down to Jetstar. I have also flown many times with Qantas/BA on the Melbourne/London route (QF 9/10 before they closed it), I have found Qantas only just adequate too (some cabin staff proved to be exceptions to the rule though). Aussies just don't seem to grasp the idea of customer service, they must think it beneath them somehow... if you can't handle it, get another job I say.
