Here's a good story from the Sydney Morning Herald about Jet Star's cost cutting, particularly in the staff training area.
I think this line sums it up:

"If you are crammed with six weeks' worth of knowledge in three weeks, it is inevitable that you are not going to be able to recall all the important pieces of information that you need to," he said.

If you read the article, you'll notice that he uses the term "airlines" not just Jetstar. I know for a fact that Tiger's cabin crew training is the same length as Jetstar. Unsure about Virgin and Qantas.

To be selected as a pilot you actually have to be smart and like myself could easily learn 6 weeks worth of knowledge in a short timeframe. As you(people continually posting on this website) spend your hours and lives surfing this website achieving nothing I can imagine it might be difficult for you to understand. However, people who put their minds to something useful quite often have high capabilities.
