Now I'm not necessarily a price sensitive customer and I never buy a ticket (or anything for that matter) just because it's the cheapest. When I say I'll never fly Jetstar again I actually mean it. I don't care how cheap they are. But it saddens me that half the people who have complained on this website will probably fly Jetstar again if the price is right. This just gives operators like Jetstar permission to continue with their squalid and sordid trade practices and with their appalling customer service. But for those of you who are price sensitive I've collected an example from both Virgin and Jetstar websites traveling on comparable dates so let's have a look:
SYD - MEL
Jetstar - $79
Virgin - $99
So it appears Jetstar are cheaper right? Think again!
Checked baggage:
Jetstar 25kg - $30
Virgin 23kg - $12
Credit card fee:
Jetstar - $7.50
Virgin - $4.50
Earn frequent flyer points:
Jetstar - $22
Virgin - included FREE OF CHARGE
Total for this flight:
Jetstar - $138.50
Virgin - $115.50
So don't be fooled. Take EVERYTHING in to account if you just want the lowest price.

For those are actually are budget travelers and don't care about frequent flyer points:
Jetstar - 20kg is $16 instead of 25kg which by the way is $25 not $30 (according to the website) (who REALLY needs to carry more than 20kg with them anyway).
If you don't have a Qantas Frequent Flyer Membership and don't care about the rest of the things included in the $17 Plus Bundle (again, not $22) then I believe this fare would come to $79 + $16 +$7.50 = 102.50.

There obviously are people who do have different requirements with checked baggage and Jetstar's fees for the checked baggage are a complete rip off and lack value compared to Virgin. That's how Jetstar deceives people in making them think that they are cheaper but they will sting them some other way. As for the points if someone like like Virgin offers you them for FREE you'd be better off to take that deal.

No I don't work for Jetstar, but I use them all the time and have friends that do work for them. I personally prefer flying them to Virgin and haven't had any problems in 3 or 4 years. A lot of people who use Jetstar are budget first time flyers, or families that hardly ever travel - points are not so important to them. I don't think I'm the ignorant one who can't even get the prices right and in doing so trying to defame the company even more.

And Virgin is no longer a budget airline. Compare Jetstar to Tiger who are more in the same class who charge a similar credit card fee, and $17.50 for 20kg baggage, or $35 for 25kg or $70 for 30kg.
And yes you're right, this is how budget airlines make money, by giving choices and to allow you to only choose what you need. and in doing so can keep the cost down.
